"Changes in charitable giving have long been linked to changes in the overall economy. Research indicates that charitable giving is associated with personal income, gross domestic product, and changes in investment returns. In general, during times of strong economic growth, giving tends to increase, and during times of slower economic growth, philanthropy continues by at a modest rate of growth. Finally, during economic downturns, giving generally declines, even after adjusting for inflation. .... In this study, we examine how congregations have been affected by and have responded to the current recession, First, we observe how congregations were impacted financially by the economic downturn. We then examine what congregations have done for their communities and congregants in response to the recession. Finally, we look at which congregations have fared better during these difficult times." -- Intro.
"More than two-thirds of congregations in a new study on congregational finances in the current recession reported that their fundraising receipts increased or remained the same in the first half of 2009 compared to 2008, even as the recession was worsening. .... Almost 37 percent of congregations reported an increase in fundraising for the first half of 2009 over 2008. Another 34 percent of reported that fundraising receipts stayed the same between 2008 and the first half of 2009. Nevertheless, nearly 30 percent experienced a decrease in giving 2009. This is 8.1 percentage points more than reported a decline in 2008". From Press release dated 27 October 2009 at: http://www.philanthropy.iupui.edu/LakeFamilyInstitute/economyGiving.aspx

"This book is about the transition period between the announcement that one pastor is leaving through the time that another pastor is well settled. The essential message is not that this is an impossible time, to be survived only with a lot of expert help. Rather, the message is that, even though the task is becoming more complex, committed people can handle it. People who have been on this journey before us can help us discover the presence of God on our journey". -- Foreword, p. ix.
